The Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft, on routine patrol in the Lagos channel, rescued 10 crew members of a Nigerian fishing trawler named OLOKUN XII which had  capsized on Monday morning after colliding with a containership, MSC CORUNA.

The ill-fated trawler was being towed by sister trawler OLOKUN IV when it ran into the 5,550 TEU Malta-flagged containership.

The rescued crew members were thereafter handed over to the officials of Barnaly Fishing Company Limited, which owned and operated the ill-fated trawler.

Commodore Malami Haruna, the commander of NNS Beecroft, warned seafarers “to navigate with caution and due consideration to the international regulation for prevention of collision when transiting within the nation’s maritime domain”, and restated that the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, was committed to ensure the security of seafarers in Nigeria’s maritime area.
