Ministry of Mines and Steel Development posts new officer for Lagos; details federal police squad for enforcement of Mineral Act Law....

Engr Mayowa Omosebi has replaced Mr Robinson Okpekpe as the mines officer in charge of the agency's Lagos office situated opposite Tafawa Balewa Square in central Lagos. Omasebi is nderstood to have been favoured because of his pro-active and vibrant stance in the face-off between the MMSD and various state and federal agencies which used to contest for turf with the mining regulatory agency.

In the first few steps to put the MMSD feet down on the business of regulating mineral production in the state, DDH gathered that the new mines officer has succeeded in getting MMSD's Abuja office to prevail on the Inspector General of Police to assign a special squad of the Nigerian Police to be on standby to respond to all request for reinforcement in all disputes the MMSD may have in Lagos to enforce the Mineral and Mining Act of 2007 which gives the agency sole power to regulate the industry nationwide.

DDH gathered that fresh bills have since the resumption of Omosebi gone out to giants like Julius Berger for dredging sand from the Lagos lagoon in Ajah for its various contracts in Lagos State. Also new bills from MMSD in Lagos are said to have been prepared for others like ARM and other heavy weight construction companies which are using sand freshly mined in the state for their infrastructure projects.

On a recent tour around mining sites in Lekki peninsula when DDH was embedded in the MMSD monitoring team, there seemed to be compliance with surface miners visited as they appeared to be complying with environmental, safety and community relations precautions set by the MMSD. Otherwise, the magazine was informed, MMSD would respond to any complaints by the host communities with a stop-work order on the surface miner until the complaints were addressed.

In a related development, DDH was informed that due to the new enforcement powers available to the MMSD in Lagos, officials of the state government agencies that formerly dragged turf with MMSD over the licensing of operators now advise dredging operators whom they issue permits to seek the partnership of coordinate-owners licensed by the MMSD because of the fear of arrest by the MMSD special Police squad if they operate without the agency's license.
